Enhancing PBIS Implementation to Identify and Deliver Mental Health Supports in a Rural Middle School

In this brief, we share lessons learned from a federally funded model demonstration designed to integrate school mental health practices within an existing PBIS framework (Weist et al., 2022). The purpose of this brief is to provide district and school leaders with strategies to consider when supporting PBIS implementation across different contexts, specifically when interconnecting mental health systems in a rural middle school setting. To illustrate these strategies and the district supports that enabled them, we highlight the core features of a rural PBIS school and discuss the key implementation successes and challenges.
